| We had another opportunity to meet up again after several weeks of missing faces when a large number of Mid Weekers responded to an invitation to the opening of Adam's new shop in Polegate. It's in the old Post Office immediately opposite his old one and he's made a wonderful job of kitting it out. I was sorely tempted by the neon pink tyre samples and a pair of those may be enough to tempt me out on my bike. As well as the Mid Week supporters there was also a large representation of Eastbourne Rovers plus Andy Seviour Super-AUK. David Dimbleby, a customer of Adam's for fourteen years cut the tape to formally open the shop and spoke encouragingly about cycling in the area. He was casually dressed in an open necked pink shirt, jacket and trousers. No lycra. In spite of the dreary weather everyone seemed to be pleased they made the effort to support Adam and wish him luck. Mike Phillips had two sausage rolls and a mini quiche. Well, it was a lovely Spring day today, Wednesday 16th May. The picnickers basked in sunshine in the recreation ground and the less hardy flocksy' year and is missing our on Sunday's 60ed to the Kings Head. A new landlord and his wife coped well with larger numbers than he had been told to expect. The missing people on the Land's End to John O'Groats trip and those in the Cotswolds were substituted by those who had missed recently because of the weather. Thelma Mehew arrived bang on mid-day and was suprised to find that she was the first in the pub; ironically Ron Ball was the last in! Mike Phillips got home safely from Norfolk and looked well - the dark rings around his eyes had vanished and he glowed. John Beaumont also made a welcome re-appearance having spent a couple of weeks away on a Sheila Simpson tour and missing a few Wednesdays because of the weather. Another welcome face (and the rest of his body as well) was Ken Smith's after a few weeks absence. Thelma Abbott is making progress and Richard has promised to bring David back among us soon. Those of us who had waited for Ron's arrival left the pub eventually having received a gratis jug of coffee from mine host, the Hailsham and Polegate contingent making a few extra miles around the lanes. |
Dates for your diaries and other information The meeting with SW London Wayfarers is arranged for July 11th at the Green Man, Horsted Keynes. Elevenses at Uckfield. We have a date for the Anniversary Lunch at Bodle Street - Wednesday, September 12th - so will have booking forms in the fullness of time. Shirley Novis's elevenses will be on the next runs list so do get your highlighters out and mark the date well On the last Wednesday in August Bill Dicker will do his annual elevenses at Horam and Sue Burton has kindly offered to host us at her home in Battle either in August or September. |
Sadly I have to report that Mary Dunn, widow of Jack, died on Easter Monday. I'm sure that there are a good number of us still riding who remember their kindly hospitality at the elevenses we used to enjoy at their home in Buxted, and Jack's company on our rides for many years. We have recently lost another of our older members with the death of Peter Lee. Peter made an appearance at our Bodle Street lunch on March 21st and it was a shock to hear this sad news. He was a regular & popular supporter of the Group before a broken neck stopped his cycling activities. After a spell in the luxury of Pembury hospital Thelma Abbott has been moved to Tunbridge Wells Cottage Hospital and is making progress. |
